Role Purpose

The GIS Data Engineer – Geospatial Data Platform is responsible for the reliability, quality, and scalability of CHAOS’ data platform.


This role ensures that the data powering CHAOS products is accurate, up-to-date, and continuously improving. You will take ownership of operational data workflows currently handled across engineering and leadership, allowing product engineers to focus fully on product development.


You will work at the intersection of data engineering, geospatial infrastructure, and data sourcing, ensuring our platform integrates high-quality datasets that unlock valuable insights for our customers.


Beyond maintaining existing pipelines, you will play a key role in identifying new data sources, improving data quality processes, and building scalable ingestion and automation systems that support CHAOS' long-term growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the day-to-day health and performance of CHAOS geospatial data platform, ensure recency, quality, and scalability of core data

  • Build and monitor scalable end-to-end data pipelines

  • Contribute to data strategy, building governance processes, and platform standards (naming, quality thresholds, access rules)

  • Maintain dataset documentation, schemas, metadata, and build internal data catalogs

  • Ensure data changes are communicated clearly across teams

  • Support establishing best practices for privacy, compliance, and responsible use of location data

  • Identify and evaluate new data sources to expand platform coverage and usefulness

  • Act as a data steward, ensuring reliable data support for internal and external stakeholders

Skills & Requirements

Required


  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering, GIS engineering, or geospatial data development

  • Strong hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines

  • Strong understanding of geospatial data concepts (coordinate systems, geometry types, spatial joins, indexing, tiling, etc.)

  • Proficiency with SQL and spatial databases (preferably PostGIS)

  • Experience working with geospatial formats such as GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, KML, WKT/WKB

  • Proficiency in Python


Nice to have


  • Exposure to real estate field, like real estate due diligence or land use analysis is a strong plus

  • Experience with modern data stacks and cloud platforms such as GCP

  • Experience supporting AI/ML pipelines using geospatial data

  • Familiarity with data governance and metadata management

  • Experience building internal data APIs or geospatial services
